According to tradition, Hercules, a strong pagan god, loved a nymph called Amalfi, but his love was short: she died and Hercules buried her in the most beautiful place in the world, and to immortalize her, he gave it her name. According to history, the town was founded after Constantino’s death; its origins come from Roman families.
Capri is an island of limestone rock that represents the outermost tip of the mountain chain on the Sorrentine peninsula. The coastline, whose dolomite cliffs fall right to the sea in many spots, is dotted with countless caves and surrounded by reefs whose shapes suggest fantastic creations. Mount Tiberio (334 m.), to the east, and Mount Solaro (589 m.) to the west are the two main peaks on the island.
Herculaneum, once called Heracleia, is an ancient town lying 5 miles (8 Km) southest to Naples, South Italy, on the western slopes of Mount Vesuvius. It is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating towns in Naples area because it is not only famous as an important archeological site, but also as a lively town which offers a variety of beautiful scenery and unvaluable arts.
Ischia is the biggest island in the Gulf of Naples. It is a volcanic island and it is constantly altered by quakes generating thermal and radioactive waters, Ischia is so famous worldwide. It includes six towns: Ischia, Porto, Casamicciola, Barano, Lacco Ameno, Forio and Serrara Fontana and it is characterized by a beautiful and varied coast, with wonderful beaches, coves and ravines that make it really fascinating.
The largest city in Campania, the capital of the province and the region, Naples is the third most populated city in Italy (after Rome and Milan), with over a million inhabitants, and is the most important industrial center and trading port for the South. It is situated halfway down the Tyrrhenian coast, at the innermost point of the Bay of Naples, between Vesuvius and the Phlegrean Fields. It has a mild and constant climate, with an average temperature of 16° C and a serene sky for at least half of the year.
Pompeii, Herculaneum, and nearby towns were probably first settled by Oscan-speaking descendants of the Neolithic inhabitants of Campania. Archaeological evidences indicate that the Oscan village of Pompeii soon came under the influence of the cultured Greeks who had settled across the bay in the 8th century BC.
Positano is situated in Campania, in the south of Italy, in Amalfi Coast. Once a wealthy maritime power, last century it began a fishing settlement, and then a popular and a seaside resort famous for its hotels and boutiques as well as for the winding stairways that connect the town and the towering cliffs above.
Procida is the smallest island in the Gulf of Neaples and it isn’t as famous as the other islands of the Gulf. Therefore tourists prefer to visit Capri and Ischia.
Procida is rich in attractions and it is very strange that it isn’t present in the tourist guides of Southern Italy.
Ravello is one of the most attractive destinations in Amalfi Coast. With a population of around 2,000, it is famous for its views and gardens. The town, once part of the Republic of Amalfi , is now a peaceful historic village popular for tourists and honeymooners. The main tourist attractions ain Ravello are the two famous gardens, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.
